I have always loved the classical approach to history, studying in chronological order for four year cycles and layering that with literature from that same time period. I will never forget my oldest son (who we homeschooled in high school) saying that history finally made sense to him. The natural relationship between history and literature is often overlooked in the public school system and studying the ancients while reading about Greek & Roman mythology helped him better understand.
