Pinching Pennies...

A while back several of us from our church ordered laundry detergent kits and began making our own laundry detergent. After my first batch, I decided to add vanilla essential oil and lavender essential oil and now have the best smelling laundry. I used the following recipe for my front loader.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap
4 Cups - hot tap water

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar, grated

1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*

½ Cup Borax

Add soap flakes to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

This recipe can be a bit much for smaller families so I would suggest halving the recipe. :-)

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Mix together equal parts of Super Washing Soda and Mule Team Borax.

Foaming Soap Refills

Before going out and purchasing foaming soap refills, I recently looked up recipes only to discover that simply adding a small amount of anti-bacterial liquid soap and filling the rest of the dispenser with water not only works beautifully but is also very affordable.

You are welcome to share your penny pinching tips as well.

I love making my own cleaners! I am on my second batch of toothpaste now!

2/3 cup baking soda
1 tsp pure peppermint extract(spearmint, cinnamon, citrus or whatever floats your boat.)
Water- just enough to make the mixture pasty.

so far so good. Still want to make some shampoo/conditioner.

Didn't you make some facial cleanser too?

The toothpaste sounds interesting!

I haven't made the facial cleanser yet but did make toner for the girls with witch hazel, tee trea oil and lavender essential oil. Shampoo and conditioner are next on my list!
